Article Guidelines for Electric Dreams

The article guidelines are pretty easy, just send them to me and I can take care of the rest. If you desire more control over the final look of the article, here are some guidelines:

1. Send in any digital format, email, attachment, etc. Word or Wordperfect preferred, but I can convert most any format. Try to save for PC if you have that option on a Mac.

The final draft goes out in very simple text across the Net. If you send the articles in 12 size Courier New without any bold, underline or italic, you will have the best idea of the final format and be able to control the look of your articles on Electric Dreams a bit better.

2. References become problematic since there is no italic or underline. You can either ignore the issue and have your references look like this:

Dillard, Jospeh (1989). All about everything to do with dreams and dreaming. Best Press: Shangrala, Blisston.

or use this method to indicate underline:

Dillard, Jospeh (1989). _All about everything to do with dreams and dreaming_. Best Press: Shangrala, Blisston.

or:

DILLARD, JOSPEH (1989). ALL ABOUT EVERYTHING TO DO WITH DREAMS AND DREAMING. BEST PRESS: SHANGRALA, BLISSTON.

3. Be sure the article is in some way about dreams and dreaming or indicate how the article benefits dreamwork or is related to dreams, dreaming, dreamwork.

4. Include contact information that can be made public at the bottom of the article. You can also include a short bio and information about any services or products that you are offering the public or Electric Dreams subscribers.

Here is the general format of the article header. Again I will do this, but many writers like to control the look and feel themselves:

5. Deadlines: As an editor, you can't send me articles too early! I'm fine if you want to pile up a years worth. But in general, anything you can get to me before the 15th of each month, I will have out in the next month's issue, usually send out the last week of each month. The only exception being if there is a special topics issue where you might get bumped to the following month.
If you would like to be on the reminder list, tell me and you will get a pulse out the second week of each month.

6. Length: Since we are an e-zine and only print paper hardcopy for show and samples, we are not limited by ~physical~ length. I can't promise that the attention span of the readers will be great, though it seems to be improving (is length is improvement)
If you write long articles and like to keep them together, I can probably handle up to 10- 12 pages or 8-10 thousand words. I would prefer to serialize a very long essay, but its your choice.
Statistically speaking, most of the articles are about 1200 words or less.

7. Language, foul and fair: Electric Dreams, the e-zine, tends towards free speech, if it is related in some way to dreams and dreaming. We haven't pulled any articles or comments or dreams in the last 7 years due to language. We have pulled some articles due to apparent lack of relevancy and this is decided by a volunteer staff and majority vote. You are welcome to appeal and we will invite you to join the discussion list to appeal.
Note: While we practice free speech on the E-zine, the dream groups themselves follow a much stricter code of ethics as developed by the Association for the Study of Dreams.

8. Authors retain the copyrights of their articles, but note that Electric Dreams is a free, public service that is distributed all around the Net and in various formats. This copyright protects you from someone copying your article and selling it, but not from free distributions. As author of the text, you are free to sell the article as you wish, as long as you note to the buyer that the text has been released to the public online.
