She has a MFA in creative writing from Bennington College. She has spent many years involved with symbols and their manifestation in dreams, art, and our waking life. In interpreting a dream, she goes through the description sentence by sentence, making notes by hand, elaborating, conjecturing. The recounting of the dream is as significant as the symbols and activities within the dream. She looks at each piece separately as a metaphor, a message, and then puts the pieces all back together into a final interpretation, which is what you read in the end. She takes the time to stop and think and allow the meaning to come through and make sense. "I have been interpreting dreams for many years. My criteria for success in this area is based upon the feedback of the dreamers. I don't simply tell a dreamer what a dream means based on my experience, nor do I utilize a standardized dictionary of symbols because I don't believe in their general application. A dreamer must feel as if their world is understood or that something personal and relevant has been revealed. That is the "a-ha" feeling we get when something rings true at a deep level. I wish that everyone could get that pleasurable feeling!" It was a very simplified depiction of a brief hypnogogic adventure in which I saw myself-- or "myselves"--as a series of cross-sectioned concentric spheres, each containing a unique world peculiar to its own radiant set of senses, yet all moving together in transformative unison, the events and objects in any given world having 'explicate' versions in every other world. This series of realities seemed infinite in either direction 'up or down' the sequence of encapsulated worlds, but the most vivid impression was of a universal principle of 'atomic triplicity' and the 'suspension' of what we know and experience as the 'physical self/world' between what I would generalize as being the 'imagining self/world' and the 'dreaming self/world.' While it seemed fairly logical that the innermost world should contain the mental constructs of imagination which we think of, after all, as being 'inside our head,' the clear but initially somewhat counterintuitive implication was that the dreaming self occupied an order of reality beyond the physical world--and was capable of seeing the true nature of the ultimate 'outer reality' with less filters, in a sense closer to the implicate order of the universe. Certainly I would make no claim that this is in fact the way that reality is constructed, but it did seem to fall in line with certain existing theories of the 'astral body' and the 'astral plane' which I would subsequently discover, as well as some of my own 'out of body'--or 'in my astral body'--experiences. After the passage of much time, it is my feeling that perhaps this diagram is as misleading as it is informative, but may represent some limited insights about some aspects of dreaming, such as, perhaps, how the dreaming self seems to deal with time in a unique way, often gathering precognitive information from an ocean of probabilities. Bio: Shawn Allen O'Neal is a visual artist and musician residing in Oklahoma. Sound in lucid dreams is the topic of our current "Dream Themes". Readers sent in various reports of music in their lucid dreams, singing, hearing voices, etc. This month's excerpt is a description of some musical lucid dreams experienced by Ralf Penderak. Musical Lucid Dreams (c) Ralf Penderak Bedtime: 2100 (I am tired, spent all the day playing with my son, sometimes 24 hours are not enough) I wake up at 0140, take short notices of two dreams. (In one of them I fly around the world, passing the Golden Gate Bridge, too. Did anyone see me?) I put on the Novadreamer mask and start a relaxation exercise. I percept cues and the dream alarm twice, I see them flashing red. Then I see white flashes. Immediately I know, that I'm dreaming... Lucid Choir with Ego-Aspects, 07 06 2000 ... but this time I'm not too excited. I feel drowsy. I'm sitting in a room with some (6-7) men. They are approximately as old as I am. We are sitting in a circle. I remember that my lucid dreams often vanish if I try to fly. What shall I do? I'm asking my co- dreamers: "Dear aspects of my ego ... (sounds strange to me) ... shall I fly or shall I sing?" One man is laughing and says: "You should better sing." I know he is laughing because he knows I like to sing, but he also knows that I'm not always sure whether my singing is welcome. I start singing. A simple melody, made of five notes. I use the sound "Aaaahh". The "h" sounds strange, different, than in waking life singing. But I don't mind. I repeat the simple line several times. After some time my companions start singing this line, too. Sounds and feels good. Then I want to do an experiment. I sing a variation of the theme on a higher level. The others remain singing the theme. This is a lucid choir! I'm very satisfied. I sing some other variations, everything feels good. Now I wonder, what will happen, if I go back to the theme. For some time all people sing with one voice. But then alternating singers create variations of their own. Very good. I have no more memory of this dream. Maybe it has been the dream alarm to interrupt it. I'm a Lucid Wave, March 28 2002 I'm in a house. I'm singing and playing guitar in one room. It is a cover version of a well-known song, maybe U2. I sing with all my heart and a voice incomparable to waking life. It is so ecstatic to make and be in this wonderful music (only a few times did I experience this level of ecstasy while performing waking life music). After the song I leave the room, enter the floor. I do some hovering and flying exercises. There is a young woman watching me. I show her that one doesn't need to flutter wildly, but tenderly. (In the dream I seemed to be reminded of a waking life experience the day before yesterday. Some perfect minutes outside in early spring's sun, all by myself and serene, enjoying the uplifting view of seagulls circling in a thermal, nearly effortless, in harmony with the natural forces. After they reach a great height, they fly in a perfectly straight line towards the Baltic Sea, which is some miles off. Seemingly without moving one feather. In this moments I conceive why men since primitive times have the ineffaceable desire to fly.) I lift myself up and hover right beneath the ceiling. I look down and see that my foot still touches ground. Hmm. I do some jumps. Sometimes staying longer in the air, sometimes landing on my belly. I wonder why it doesn't work all the time until it dawns on me that I'm dreaming. I immediately wake up. But don't move. Instead of hand rubbing I decide to use guitar playing to re-enter the dreamstate. I focus on the feeling of body, of guitar in hand and striking of the strings, not on the sound. After some seconds the feeling gets more and more realistic. Now I can hear the sound, too. The longer I play, the larger vibrations I experience. It feels like the dreambody morphs into waves of sounds, except the arms, which keep playing the guitar. It is an ecstatic experience. I'm happy that I've come that far in my dream- practice. But unfortunately I still seem not to be able to "bear" this ecstasy for more than some seconds. (But I can say that I'm getting better in the "enjoying - exercise".) I force the dream body to let go of physical body with the intention to enter another dream. But this seems to be too hard to try. Dreambody vanishes. I turn and doze into another non-lucid dream. ******** The Lucid Dream Exchange is a quarterly newsletter featuring lucid dreams and lucid dream related articles, poetry, interviews, and book reviews. Hence the name, Rapid Eye Movement, or REM. The period of REM is longest for folks who are acquiring new information: infants and students, for example. It becomes shorter as we grow older and if we have fewer new experiences. REM sleep boosts memory and learning. People test better with a night of REM sleep than without. During REM sleep the large muscles of the body are relaxed, even paralyzed. The arms, legs and torso are limp. Breathing is irregular, brain temperature and blood flow soar, the muscles of the middle ear contract and the face twitches. The time between the start of one REM period and the next is about 90 minutes. This is same "fantasy cycle" that occurs in the waking state, although we are usually not aware of it unless we are at rest and tracking our random thoughts. The peak of the cycle favors highly emotional thoughts and images, just the sort that result in dramatic dreams when we close out the outer environment during sleep. The first REM sleep period may be only 5 minutes in length, but it can last as long as an hour close to morning. The dream drama shifts from quick previews to a full-length feature film. In fact, about 50 percent of REM dreaming time will occur in the last 2 hours of sleep. So, when you are trying to recall dreams, this is the best time to retrieve them. We can also dream in non-REM periods, although those dreams tend to be more thought-like and analytical. This is the ebb of the fantasy cycle. In the waking state, we are able to better concentrate on our immediate surroundings and concrete problems. In the dream state, we are more concerned with mundane life than imaginative fantasy. During non-REM sleep, there is little brain activity, steady pulse, regular heartbeat. And a lot of snoring. But in the lighter stages of sleep, motor activity is not blocked, so our bodies are free to move about, although we rarely do more than roll over in bed. Actually, a "restless night's sleep," is likely due to us coming to the brink of wakefulness, shifting around, then returning to the sleep state. The entire sleep cycle is a trip through different states of consciousness. At the start of the night we begin at alpha, our drowsy, conscious mode and then slip through four stages of non- REM sleep. Each stage puts more and more distance between us and the external environment. The last two stages are called delta. In delta, there are no large body movements, unless sleep-talking or sleep-walking occur. Deep, or delta sleep, is mostly non-dreaming type of sleep. Deep sleep helps battle infection and depression. It's the rejuvenating sort of sleep that combats mental and physical fatigue and restores a sense of well-being. Delta occurs during the first couple of sleep cycles. So, extending your stay in bed will produce only more shallow sleep. This is great for certain types of dream recall, like lucid dreaming, but not for good sleep hygiene. Despite romantic metaphor, REM is not a descent into the depths of the underworld of sleep. It's actually quite close to the waking state of consciousness. How To Get A Good Night's Sleep What's the first step to dream health? I suggest you start at the most basic level - look to the condition of your body. Forget trying to dream. Get a good night's sleep. Deep, deep, dreamless sleep. Allow your mind-body the chance to rest and recuperate from the pressures of the day. Is this approach bad for dreaming? I don't think so. In the laboratory, attempts to prevent REM sleep always produced a "rebound" effect. Once the inhibitor was removed, there was an extraordinary increase in REM. So taking a vacation from dream recall might actually encourage your psyche to return to dreaming with renewed vigor. The dreamers I know try different tricks to lure slumber. Some are quite involved, others basic common sense. For instance, Colin told me, "If I've been watching an action TV program or the news, I'll look at some nature video or something that's more passive before going to bed." I agree: the stimulus of our daytime existence can agitate us, and putting a buffer between daily life and sleep is very wise. Kyla lies on her back, does deep breathing and repeats over and over, "My brain is very relaxed. My brain is very relaxed." Nowadays my brain is *too* relaxed, so I have no problem there. It's my body that needs to unwind, so if I used this mantra, I'd change the wording to "My body is very relaxed." For me, body includes the brain. Over time, I learned that I could get a good night's sleep if I took some basic precautions. Close the window to keep out noise. Alternately, let the fan or heater create "white noise" to mask background sounds. In addition, an oscillating fan can simulate rocking motions, which lull even a baby to sleep. Make sure the bedroom had plenty of fresh air circulating if not from the window, then open the door to the rest of the house. Extra oxygen stimulates the brain. Set the heater at a lower temperature and use extra covers instead. (Layers allow me to adjust temperature without rising. I flip the blankets over with my feet, while my torso lies still.) Cover the digital lights on the clock and computer accessories. Make sure the hall light is turned off. (Even with my eyes closed, I can sense the light.) Make an extra effort to have good sleep during the nights before a big day. (On the eve of such a day, I can experience loss of sleep from planning, worrying or too much excited anticipation. And if the day runs long, I won't have my usual amount of sleep.) When the body is under-stimulated, exercise more, but not enough to strain or cramp muscles. You get sleepy due to the fall of body temperature. Thus exercise four to six hours prior to bedtime will initially cause your temperature to rise; when it falls, you'll get drowsy and be more prone to sleep. (This helps on days when I've been engrossed in computer work.) Use progressive relaxation for physical tension (that's relaxing each part of your body, starting with your toes and working your way up to your head). Some relaxation tapes are useful to this end. "Sing" to sleep with soothing tunes from a hand-held tape or CD player. This is the adult version of a lullaby. Dull an active mind or distract yourself from worries with repetitious tasks prior to sleep. (Counting backwards from 100 to 1 or counting sheep are such exercises. Mantras and chants work, too.) Switch from logical thinking to fantasy, which is a type of thought pattern more closely related to sleep, especially dreaming sleep. Almost all sleep researchers agree that sleeping pills are virtually useless and their addictive proclivity makes them a potential problem. Unfortunately, some drugs, like alcohol, barbiturates and momoamine oxidase inhibitors, actually suppress REM if used over an extended period. They also tend to keep you at lighter levels of slumber. Due to the lack of deep sleep, your body can take longer to repair and your mind, more time to clear. So while you're on medication, you may sleep longer. People who suffer from minor illnesses, influenza and colds are subject to increased non-REM sleep. Catnaps during the day throw off the sleep rhythm of the body and thus should be avoided unless they occur during times when REM sleep probability is high. If you rise in early morning, your peak for daytime REM is late morning. The probability falls until the onset of night sleep, about 12 hours later. If you do have trouble sleeping, it might be physical arousal: feeling restless, tossing and turning, sweats and hot flashes. Or aliments, upset stomach, headaches, wounds, strains and pains. High stress, premenstrual tension and pregnancy equals the need for more sleep. As you get older, you don't sleep as deeply as an infant or child and, often, not as long as you used to. Or your problem may be mental arousal: rumination, planning, worrying and difficulty controlling thoughts. The best solution is to get up and do something physically active. Check List For A Good Night's Sleep What factors influence your sleep? I suggest you use a check list like the one below to review them. As I considered each item on my list, I judged whether each factor had, overall, a positive, neutral or negative impact. Some factors I couldn't do much about, except be aware of their influence. The rest alerted me to areas where I needed to initiate action. As you read these items, keep track of your own score. What can you do to improve your sleep? Where can you just relax and snooze? 1. Genetic endowment (+) How long do you sleep? 2. Circadian rhythms (-) Are you a night person (owl) or a morning person (lark)? Do you take daytime naps? Go to sleep at a regular time? 3. Insomnia (0) Do you have trouble falling asleep or difficulty staying asleep? 4. Medical condition and medication (-/+) How's the health of your body and brain? Do you take sleeping pills, herbs or any medications that influence sleep? 5. Food and drink (0) When did you last eat? Does hunger or a full bladder awaken you? 6. Alcohol, tobacco and caffeine (+) When did you last indulge? If you do, it's best several hours before sleep, perhaps before or with a meal. 7. Environment (+/-) Do you sleep with a person who snores or with someone who has bad sleep habits? Are you willing to banish pets from your bedroom when they infer with your sleep? What's the condition of your bedding? 8. Location (+) How insulated are you from noise, light and temperature shifts? 9. Daily exercise (+) Did you get enough? Or too much, and feel aches and strains? 10. Activities prior to sleep (-/+) Are you willing to turn off the TV an hour before you go to sleep? 11. Stress and anxiety (-) What relaxation techniques do you use? 12. Attitude (+) Do you like to sleep? Sometimes changing just one item can make a big difference. Hope you sleep well tonight! The idea I proposed to a number of friends and fellow dreamers was that possibly, if people all over the world would dream together, we might dream the world toward peace. The story of the World Dreams Peace Bridge was told in a paper, presented at the 2002 conference of the Association for the Study of dreams. That paper can be found here http://dreamgate.com/dream/ed-backissues/ed9-7.txt The first project of the World Dreams Peace Bridge was a Yahoo discussion group, which dreamers can still join by sending a post to worlddreams-subscribe@yahoogroups.com. Around fifty people belong to the group, which discusses ideas, projects and dreams. Members contribute art and photographs, conduct meditations and vigils. One of the first projects to grow out of the World Dreams Peace Bridge was a dance story, "The Crow and the Phoenix," dreamed and choreographed by Valley Reed of Dallas, Texas, and danced by her and two other professional dancers at the April ASD regional meeting in Cincinnati, Ohio. To read the story of this dance and see photos of its production, go here From the Cincinnati Regional ASD Program http://asdreams.org/conferences/2002cincinnati/crow_and_phoenix.ht m Most recently, after a dream recorded by Jeremy Seligson in Korea, the members of the World Dreams Peace Bridge have been working on a Peace Train project. Several groups of school children are already at work, creating Peace Trains to send around the world, but adults can create Peace Trains as well. The Peace Train project is a work in progress, but you can see where we are to date by going to Peace Train (http://www.alphalink.net.au/~mermaid/peacetrain.html) Victoria Quinton in Australia (who created the preceding web page) has also created an interesting twist on the Peace Train idea by both sending colored candles to people and asking them to light a candle for peace, and also by starting a peace candle project at nervousness.com NERVOUS Industries: Peace trains Of course, all this activity continues to expand, as more dreamers find support in growing dreams of peace. The World Dreams Peace Bridge has now reached the point where it has begun to develop its own web site, under the creative artistry of Elizabeth Diaz of California, and with the support of The iMAGE Project, a nonprofit research and education organization. W. Kellogg III, Ph.D. o|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|o (A modified and expanded version of: "A Virtual Reality Dream: And Now for Something Completely Different ..." 2002 E. W. Kellogg III, Ph.D., a paper published in The Lucidity Exchange, Number 22, April 2002) The movie The Matrix vividly portrays a world where computer technology has become so advanced that a simulated physical reality has become indistinguishable from the 'real' thing. Although virtual reality (VR) today does not seem anywhere as realistic, given the current rate of advancement of computer technology (according to "Moore's Law" computer processing speed doubles every 18 months) that day will arrive in the not so distant future. Of course, dreams already provide us with a kind of 'VR', one in which simulations of all of the physical senses can potentially play a part. Also, our dream life both reflects and incorporates elements of our waking experience - so much so that our dreams today in many ways differ greatly from that of earlier generations. Movies and television have allowed us to vicariously experience everything from baking cookies to exploring distant galaxies, and we have incorporated these experiences into our dreams. Still, however hypnotic, these light and sound productions seem rather crude, and viewers must willingly "suspend disbelief" to experience the full effect. Once perfected, virtual reality may become perceptually indistinguishable from 'physical reality', or may even credibly simulate the experiences of the most fantastic dreams. All this might cause us to wonder - once realistic VR becomes a part of our waking lives, what impact will it have on our dreaming lives? Now, by accepted definition, for a dream to qualify as lucid in a minimal way, means that dreamers must at least vaguely realize that they dream while they dream. However, full lucidity requires far more than this. In a fully lucid dream I think clearly and remember clearly. I feel an extraordinary sense of self, and have full command of my intellectual and motivational abilities. But even if fully aware, dreamers can only recognize that they dream when they encounter discrepancies between dream phenomena and waking phenomena. Floating in the air, or seeing that the words on a sign have changed when you look at it twice, seem obvious cues. But not every dream displays such cues - some simulate physical reality seamlessly. For example, 'false awakenings' can fool even the most experienced lucid dreamers, as memory, perception, and expectation agree in a way that deceive even the most clear thinking. So how will lucid dreamers of the future discriminate between "dreaming of a virtual reality", and "a virtual reality"? Or will they? The usual tests won't work. Even the most lucid and clear thinking of dreamers, might fail the test for lucidity in a minimal sense by mistaking "a dream of a virtual reality" for the virtual reality it simulates, failing to realize that they dream while they dream. What will happen to the simple definition of dream lucidity then? Sound farfetched? Well, not to me, because I've already had such a dream, one of the most incredible dreams that I've ever experienced. The dream does not qualify as a lucid dream in a technical sense, because I did not realize that I dreamed while I dreamed. And yet, my ability to think and to perceive seemed as lucid, in fact more lucid, than in all but a few of my fully lucid dreams, where qualitatively I seem at least as 'lucid' as I do in ordinary physical waking life. I've appended it below as an example of a new type of dream that although rare now, may soon become commonplace, as "the shape of dreams to come." VR Dream Vol. 47 p 148: 7/8/01 "I virtually drive a race car along a scenic and deserted race course - a fresh blacktop highway winds through nicely simulated New England scenery in early autumn - just a touch of color in a forest of trees and plants in the hills and valleys I drive through. A mostly visual experience though - not much in the way of kinesthetic sensation, only a vague sense of movement. I come to an intersection, and decide for fun to drive down it the wrong way. I immediately see a car heading towards me, and switch lanes, and then I see a group of cars by the side of the road, parked. This looks interesting - it looks like the entrance to a virtual country club. I see a sign that says "Restaurant and Guest Area", a place where visitors, tired of racing, can refresh themselves. I wonder what sort of experiences they've programmed inside, and get out of my car, and climb up some stone steps to find an outside bar near the entrance to the clubhouse. An odd sort of skinny "bartender" greets me - "Good day! What can I do for you sir?" I ask for something simple, to see if I can taste virtual food. I ask for a fruit, and he hands me something that looks like an old head of decayed romaine lettuce, the leaves yellow and wilted, with a sort of peeled "mango/pineapple" on top. I throw the "lettuce to the ground" where an odd looking "squirrel/monkey" "eats" it. Although the fruit looks to have decayed at the bottom, I decide to give it a try - no need to worry about bacteria with virtual food. I experience only a vague sensation of chewing, and no real taste, and tell the bartender, who now looks remarkably like a skinny frog. My lack of sensation sets off some sort of alarm, and when I go inside a virtual "Doctor/Programmer" in a white coat, and two 'nurses' in loose white gowns greet me. The "man" looks 40 or so, the "nurses", both well built and attractive in a sort of generic way, about 30. They tell me that as a first time user, that they need to do some testing on me so that they can recalibrate the program. I sit on a sort of "hospital bed", while the nurses put food on precise areas of my "tongue", careful not to touch "my lips", trying to locate a particular taste bud, without success - I report only vague sensations as they place virtual foods on my tongue, and no taste. I joke that maybe I don't have that particular taste bud (designated by something like HMG 243). They reply that I do, but I must have it higher up, so they'll need to do a procedure on me to calibrate it, so that I can get the full sensory effect. I wonder if the fact that I do not virtually smell anything might account in part for the inadequacy of virtual taste. Also, I do not feel comfortable about this - although already this virtual reality program has gone far beyond my expectations, even for the programs of 2025 or so (when I believe this takes place), I do not like the idea that it might somehow modify my physical body. I don't understand how it could do so either - I vaguely remember myself as "hooked up", my physical body lying on a bed somewhere, but do not recall doing it in a hospital environment or even at a VR hookup institution. In fact if anything, I remember simply going online at home, perhaps wearing a helmet and goggles. But I can't remember details. The "Doctor" comes over, using a spatula to place virtual food to different spots on the side of my tongue - I tell him that I feel that most of my taste receptors lie in the middle of my tongue and in the back, and that he should try there. The two nurses come in - one holds a glass with "banana" pieces in it - she plans to place it in the middle of my tongue to test what will happen. I convince them to let me try, and they reluctantly agree, telling me not to touch my lips with the glass or banana piece as I do so, as it will destroy the effect. I tip the glass over my mouth, and drop a piece in the middle of my tongue. As the piece passes my lips, I immediately feel an odd sensation - my lips feel hot, as if suffused on the inside with hot sauce. This sensation quickly passes. I begin to chew and the texture of the piece gets stronger and stronger, almost like in waking physical reality (WPR), at which point I begin to taste "banana" as well - at about 50% WPR intensity. I let them know and they feel pleased with my success. I lie down on the bed, and one of the nurses begins testing my sense of body sensation of touch, touching the sides of my abdomen and my chest. When I again report success, that this feels virtually real, she tells me to touch her. She crouches more or less on top of me as I do so, touching "her" on the sides and on the breasts - her "flesh" feels very firm, but also somehow cold, and somehow lifeless. When I touch her breasts, she tells me that when fully calibrated, clients can do anything that they want to with the virtual women, up to and including fully satisfying "sex". I feel intrigued - although "she" looks a bit generic and vacuous, her large "breasts" hang almost fully exposed to my view as she crouches over me. However, the coldness of her body, and the "no one at home" expression in her eyes (like the robot saloon girl in the movie "Westworld") puts me off. Also I wonder about where the data of the clients activities goes - and if one can depend on the company to keep the information reliably confidential. I decline her offer, but only tell her as a reason about the coldness of her body to the touch. They institute a procedure - a thermal wrap around my physical hand? - to correct this problem. It works - my right hand immediately feels very hot and flushed. To celebrate my success, they take me to the "restaurant", where the maitre'd shows me to a table in a luxurious country club setting - lots of polished wood and an extensive menu. I wonder about eating the food here - although clearly I need not restrict myself to a vegetarian diet, I have no desire to try virtual meat dishes either, although that seems most of what they offer. "Two women" come over and ask if they can join me - one looks around 40, the other in her teens. They both present themselves as "real people", who have visited VR a few times but who still feel quite excited about it all. I ask the older one about her icon (VR body) - she comments she looks like this for variety, she could look like a teenager if she chose. She demonstrates this to me - as she brushes her hair back with her hand, she transforms her icon to 18 or so in appearance, but then she transforms her icon back to its original appearance. They tell me they feel really honored to sit with a "Professor", and I realize I have not seen my own icon yet. I look in the window glass - which makes a good mirror, and see myself - I look tall and thin, I have a full head of straight white hair more or less sticking up, and a pair of glasses with thick black frames. I laugh - I look like a Western scientist as portrayed in a Japanese cartoon! I appreciate the logic behind my icon choice, but respond with some dismay on my icon's thin arms and narrow shoulders. I grin as I ruefully tell the two women that all of that work at weight training and exercising over the years in my WPR health club apparently seemed in vain . . . As I reflect on my own VR body, I also wonder about the two "women" with me, and what their physical bodies look like, if they really have physical bodies and do not seem especially well animated VR simulations. "Are you a first timer?" the "older woman" asks. I tell her not exactly, the friend who recommended the program to me (Steve S.) had told me quite a bit about it, and I have had extensive experiences in another kind of virtual reality as an adept lucid dreamer. They look puzzled so I explain lucid dreaming to them, "knowing that you dream while you dream", fully conscious in the "original virtual world". Further, I explain how the phenomenological epoch‚, has just as much relevance here in this virtual reality as it does in dream reality. That by focusing on your direct experience, and suspending judgment in the assumptions that you make about what you experience, you can perceive more clearly. For example, here in VR you don't know if you deal with "real" people - WPR people manifesting through icons, or with "virtual people". Because of my own phenomenological attitude, I realized from the outset that I did not know into which category I should place them, and that the same situation applied for them in respect to me. With a laugh they respond, "Well, you already know more than we do!" A sort of alarm goes off, and the "Doctor" shows up at our table, telling us that all guests have to exit the program, as some sort of problem has come up. In the background I hear a rumor that some boy has died online. I feel unhappy and frustrated that I have to leave just as I'd begun to get the hang of this program, but move towards the lobby, where a "woman" directs "guests/WPR people" to go to one side of the room, and virtual people to the other. I see with some interest, that the two "women" who had sat at the table with me go to the "virtual people" side of the room. I call to them that they might want to try exiting through the "real people" portal. The woman directing guests says "Any virtual people who try to leave by the guest gate will not survive, they will disintegrate." One of the "women", now an attractive honey blonde looks at me questioningly. I tell her "Who knows what will happen if you try to leave by the guest portal? You may make it across to physical reality, or you may indeed get destroyed. You have to choose." She decides to try going through the guest portal, and to chance dissolution. I tell her "I can offer no guarantee, you may in fact disintegrate, but if you do make it through, I'll look after you." We go into a large elevator like room. (As we wait for it to activate, in the background I see a boy, who wears a rather undersized scrawny icon, complaining to his father that he lost his fat/mass allotment to his sister during the transition when they entered this virtual reality program because of a computer glitch. She likes the result, which gave her a better body, and refuses to give the mass back. The father patiently reminds the boy - obviously for the third or fourth time, that the computer people agreed to keep the settings that way, and he had already agreed to it.) The elevator activates, I sense movement and see lights flashing, and for a moment my blond companion looks like she'll make it. But then I see her begin to evaporate before my eyes, until nothing more than a conical wedge of pseudo flesh remains, about a foot long and shrinking rapidly. I pick it up, and as it disappears I wonder if virtual people have souls, and if so, where they go. Feeling a bit saddened, and hoping that she still exists in some form, I wish "her" well. Suddenly, with a small shock I find myself in an enormous room, at the top of some giant stairs, feeling quite disoriented. I feel pain as if something like a claw had just slashed my leg, but looking around I see nothing. I assume I still seem in VR, but somehow dumped into another program. I then see a huge "lion" 10 feet high stalking me. I jump, and find myself near the ceiling, 40 feet up or so. The cat nearly slashes me again as I go down, chasing me as I jump around. Finally, I wonder if my lucid dreaming skills might work, as the program must have some sort of hook up with my mind and my beliefs, so on the next jump I call out "Up! Up!" and achieve a sort of unstable levitation - just high enough to avoid the cat. But now that I have the leisure to look, I see that the "lion" actually looks like a big orange housecat. As I continue to levitate, I increase in size until I now fit my surroundings - in an analogue of my usual human size, in an ordinary house, with an ordinary orange housecat. The housecat now ignores me, and I see another virtual animal - a Labrador retriever with a red coat. I pat it on the head, wondering just how attached one could become to these virtual animals, which somehow still seem sort of empty, despite the realistic detail." RWPR Commentary After awakening I felt greatly disoriented and uncoordinated, and could hardly navigate around the room to get a pen and notepad. Everything felt unreal. I also felt a strange tingling sensation in my body, and felt absolutely amazed that I could have had such a completely different "dream" from any I had experienced before - with over 15,000 recorded! I'd eaten and done nothing unusual to account for the dream - and had not even taken a B vitamin before retiring at about 2 AM. I also had no overt day residue to account for it, although I did see a movie titled "Chain Reaction" with Keanu Reeves (who starred in The Matrix) the evening before. Also, some of the background details may have come from Tad Williams' Otherland, the last volume in a series of books set mostly in a detailed virtual reality which I'd read about two months ago. During the experience, although fully lucid in both thought and in perception, I remained almost entirely cut off from any memories of my actual waking physical reality situation. Instead, I had a false set of memories, in which I remembered trying out a VR racing car simulation on the recommendation of a friend, sometime around 2025 C.E., which I remembered as "now". I had some difficulty remembering details during the experience, but with everything else going on, I did not have the leisure to reflect on the few inconsistencies that puzzled me. Only at the very end, after successfully levitating in the air to escape the claws of the housecat/lion, did I even vaguely consider the possibility that I might actually dream the experience - but with the false memory I had as a foundation, the VR explanation appeared far more congruent and convincing. In point of fact, my assumption that I experienced a virtual reality and not a dream as such, facilitated a mindset that made me more critically and continuously aware of discrepancies than in even fully lucid dreams. The incredibly detailed memory that I had after I awakened, may have resulted from the intense mental focus that I directed at what I experienced, during the experience. In fully lucid dreams I now take it for granted - in a general way - that dream objects have bizarre attributes. Because of this attitude, I only occasionally look at specific dream objects in a critical way to see how they compare with their waking physical reality counterparts. In this VR scenario, I felt keenly interested in how well VR objects simulated the corresponding WPR objects, and consciously and continuously noted any of the discrepancies between what I saw, and the physical reality counterparts they "simulated". I made extensive use of quotation marks (" ") in the dream account above to indicate my continuous and overt awareness - even in minor details - that I experienced VR objects and not WPR objects. Because of this critical mindset, I looked at everything in the dreamscape with fresh eyes, trying to take nothing for granted. Even so, in a technical sense this dream does not qualify as a "lucid" because I did not realize that I dreamed. Only the fact that I based my judgment of the situation on a false (or perhaps a future?) 2025 memory prevented me from realizing that I dreamed. The VR explanation just seemed far more congruent with what I experienced than did a dream explanation. This experience brings to light some interesting speculations on the relationships between lucidity, memory and personal identity. <<<<<<<<<<<<<<|||||||>>>>>>>>>>>|||||<<<<<<<<<<<< Where is the Global Dreaming News? In the first one; It was dark I was in a vehicle driving in a town. I know my wife and seven year old sone were somewhere in the back seat. I was seated in the from but someone else was driving. Threre was someone else in the back two. The car stopped and there were two men standing beside it. The one right outside my window had a black and white patterned hawaian shirt. No words were spoken but I knew they were carjackers and armed as most Nairobi gangsters are. The fear arose because somehow I knew they were totally ruthless and my son was in the car. I was so afraid I tried to turn in my seat to comfort my son or find some way of protecting him but could manage only a hoarse word. It ended abruptly. Two days later. This one was chilling but brilliant, all the same: I noticed a severed head on the floor of my office. It was the head of an elderly Asian man. Funnily enough neither myself nor my employees took any notice. We just ignored it and carried on working like it wasnt there The head remained there and over a few days and decomposed till only a face remained buzzed over by a few flies. A day later I was talking to my landlord and some other people were there. It was a relaxing situation on a verandah across from the office. I notice many people in the office and went to see what was going on.I found my employees and all my family obviously agitated about the face. My elder brother said'XXXXX what have you done'. Funnily the face had now changed to a little african girls with large white eyes. It was now alive though only a face with no head behind it and blinking alot. My brother again said 'I know it will follow me' as he walked out terrified trying to get away from it. The face rose about a foot off the ground and followed him out the door. Neither menacing or threatening, just following. A face without a head. But a fully formed face that looked normal from straight ahead. I found myself outside and the face now looked at me. I tried to get away from it and walked into the office.it just glided along a foot of the ground behind me just looking at me and blinking. the dream ended!!! wow. am I in trouble Comments: __________________________________________________________________ ______ Message: 570-005 Subject: Immortality dream_title: Immortality dream_date: 09-21-02 dreamer_name: fire dream_text: In my dream It is a big nasty storm was a flood and i was floating over the flood and Lightning hit or struck me and then a Tidal wave came and i felt it. I was toward the end of the hall, looking at some jewelery. As i noticed this chinesse dragon, brass ring, someone picked it up. A women's voice said isn't this pretty, it would look really good on you. Before i knew it i looked up and it was my Great grandmother who past nearly away 16 years ago. I looked at her with astonishment and surprise. She smiled at me as i begain to cry in my dream. My crying seemd to come from the pit of my stomach. As i told her how much i missed her, and told her i didn't understand why she was there. I cried and cried! She said i am here, don't worry i am here. Then for some reason i had to leave, so as i began to turn to my right to walk away. I have this feeling to look back, and at the end of the hall at the oppisite side, i see an uncle (whom i wasn't as close with)at the enterance of the other end looking at me. He died just last year. He stood in the doorway and stared at me with a smile on his face, he waved and that was it. But what i noticed that was ever more odd was that the door way was a huge enterance, with a very bright light coming through. I also distinctly remember thinking in the dream, how odd, why would i think of my uncle and grandma together in a dream? The were on differnt sides of the family and had a different signifagance to me. Then i waved back as i continued to, turned back around in my original direction and continued to walk out of the hall. I was wearing an awful white wedding dress, looked like a meringue and the top had one pink stripe down the front of it.My groom arrived late and he turned out to be my current boyfriend (who I've only been seeing for 2 months). He was wearing tracksuit bottoms and trainers. I nearly cried and said "this is meant to be my special day and look what you're wearing!!" The parking lot was desolate, no guests. But i do remember this one girl, who I'm not talking to at the moment after a major fight, was there. i invited her to the reception. we then decided to go to the meal and reception (we didn't actually get married). But no one had organized cars, the meal or the reception. i then found myself on a bus without my parents or groom, in my wedding dress inviting a few people to this reception that wasn't planned. this one annoying 12 year old who gets my actual bus during the week started hassling me and i told him if he dirtied my wedding dress i'd kill him. dream_comments: I haven't a clue what this means. I am watching observing young teenagers gathering along the cost on the sand to enjoy the beach. There are young kids there as well intermixed with the teenagers. to my mid-left there is a group of adult horses, not many... maybe about 5. Now I am on my bike riding over towards those horses. The beach turns into medium sized rocks and a bit of grass. Ahead of me I see the rocks drop gradually merge into a drop, as if a down slope in the mountain. I continue riding and see a pony which had fallen got stuck down that slope. I brought the pony back to the older horses. Afterwards, I continue down the slope in which I realize ther was a young boy around 10 years of age riding next to me but not necessarily with me. We continue riding and go deeper down into the forest, until we realize that we are in some inhabited area. It is an area that looks deserted, yet we can feel there is someone there. We continue riding now in a large hallway. The hallway is not enclosed, but it is cemented, as if someone tried to build a habitable place deep in the forest. Both of us come to the drop of the hallway. Next thing, I can feel the boy crying. He has been caught by this person. I hurry trying to find my way back up this cement drop, but I look around and see different doors and can feel this mans psyche and darkness in all the rooms and feel the heaviness of breathing all around. But, I have to get out. So, I keep trying to climb, and drag my bike with me. I know I will need this bike to get out of there quickly. I see an opening in the forest surrounded by small hills of trees in close proximity. I am peddling, but can still feel this mans darkness around. Finally, I see a bit of a building and opening to a neighbor hood. I continue past this building ,which appears to be a convienience store, into the suburban neighborhood. The houses are new and compact and modern. There are kids playing in the street and the pool. I asked them if there were a history of kids missing, they said yes but didn't seem to concerned. The adults seemed even less concerned. And, then my next thought was that this is not much safer than were I just was and decided to keep going further on my bike. That is when I awoke. dream_comments: I am 24 and have had dreams every night- many of them each night- since I was 6 or so. It seems as though I "interrupted the dream, because it was already in progress. It also seems as though it was not completed when I awakened. As I recall, an old friend of mine (I have not seen since high school)and my self were arriving at a house (I am assuming it was mine because as I got in I was starting laundry and running bath water)I breifly spoke to him specifically calling him by his first and last name. As I walked out of the bathroom, I noticed that all of the lights I had previously turned on were out and would not come back on. Curiously, the only light that would come on was the bathroom. The room I had just left. I immediately grabbed my keys and ran out, calling his name only once. I ran to the side of the house attempting to get to my car, only to have someone/something grab me as say "we can make this easy or we can do this the hard way". I did not recognize the voice. It was gravely and course. His breathing was labored. Sencing fear and imminent danger to my self, I attempted to break away, even piercing the soft area on the left side of his laryx with my keys...It was at that time that I awakened..Nervous. It was 0545, almost time to wake up for the day. dream_comments: Ominous, scared...Please give me your honest thoughts and opinions. thanks, M. "will you take two of the russian exchange cadets with you?" he asks. "they were on disciplinary detention until now and do not know the way to the conference." of course i agree to escort them. two young men come when called. they are dressed in fancy dress uniform and quickly fall into step behind me as a hurry along the side walk. the heels of their polished boots make a comforting cadence as they march. my softer civilian shoes make no impression at all. two more buildings down the way, i see where the conference is being held, but the sidewalk ends just short of there. we have to wade through long uncut grasses to come up behind the building. there are two ornate doors, both shut and locked. i choose the furthest door as closer to the back stage of the auditorium within. i pound loudly on the door. but it is the other door about 30 meters back which opens and a priest in his robes and vestments steps out. he gestures for us to come back. "is there any reason you can not open this door?" i shout back to him. it really is much easier to get to where we need to be by this door. "that door was sealed years ago, and no one has a key." he yells back us, so we walk down the marble stairs and tromp back through the tall weeds to the other door. once inside, i point down a hallway to the general auditorium and the two military cadets march off, still in perfect step. i head the other way toward the stage area. i no sooner arrive at the stage door when my friend, witherspoon, comes up with another man. "you certainly know how to wait until the last possible minute." herold says to me, taking the light box with the paper in it. he and the other man want to proof read it for technical errors before i read it, but i doubt there is time. i go down the waiting ramp in the wings to the main stage. i see that there is a short break before my scheduled time. there are a number of professors coming and going into the main auditorium which is abuzz with that sound made by large audiences at their leisure. i feel a slight thrill of expectancy that in a few moments they will quiet down into attentive silence to hear my words on theoretic generative grammar. soon witherspoon and the other man come back. they had divided up the paper so each only got to read half of it. i can see that the other man has marked up his pages with frequent comments in a bright red pen. i hope that i can still read my manuscript and maybe incorporate some of his addenda while keeping a coherent reading voice. thankfully, witherspoon's pages are hardly marked at all. a portly woman has joined them and she hands me the bibliography references from the end. "you know," she starts to say, "in the proper reference format, the dates go here while the volume numbers are placed here." she points to a few marks she has made on the typescript. i consider her comments for a little then feel a little peeved. here i am at showtime and she is criticizing some minor detail relevant only to photoready production. "look, the turabian and chicago styles of reference are arcane details of academic nonsense at this point. my reference style just puts the data in the natural order of its salience and leaves it at that." i snatch the pages away from her with a jerk and put them at the end of the pile of pages. she walks away with an annoyed sniff. i did not find her to be very helpful. now the master of ceremonies walks up to me and asks if i am ready. i nod affirmative. he is dressed in a long formal black tuxedo with white paper collar. he leads me up the ramp. i can feel that my shirt has pulled partially out from my pants, but when i try to smooth it back it rumples. so i decide to just pull it out all the way. since i will be standing behind a large wooden podium while reading my paper, it should not matter at all whether it is tucked in or not, so long as the top looks smooth. no sooner do we arrive at the edge of the stage then a bright spotlight hits me with it warm glow. the audience laughs as the master of ceremonies separates from me. i just now notice that i am wearing an old comfortable pair of cutoff jeans so my long legs are exposed. why didn't i think to wear a new suit or tuxedo to this? i do not know but there is nothing for it now except to try to stay comfortable being way underdressed. "and now for the next paper in our linguistics section." the mc says into a microphone from his lectern. i look around, but i do not see the podium i had practiced upon. a stage hand in the wings gestures for me to come over there. as i walk offstage, a dean from a nearby college comes over to me. "all this rubbish about gesture languages needs to be toned down. they are semiotic speech acts and have very little generative properties at all." "i have quite a bit of experience with signed languages." i tell him. "and you will find empirical data supports a formal syntactic approach." i have no more time to debate this now. i am taken way back stage to a side room where about twelve caterers are preparing a buffet side board for the next break. there beside the wall is a small wooden lectern. i am expected to read by paper back here? i put my pages on the podium and look around. "where is the microphone?" i ask. one of the cooks points to small gooseneck microphone suspended about three feet to my right. "can't that be put in the middle of my stand about here?" i indicate the space just above the pages i have to read. the cook shrugs and pulls the microphone with its cord way back into the food preparations so to reroute its path up to my reading area. i know the audience is getting impatient out there in the hushed dark, waiting to hear my voice come over the speakers. finally the kitchen staff manage to get the mic within a foot of my desired position, so i will just have to live with that. "do you know who this is?" he points to small brass plate engraved with many names, covered with a sprinkling of white flour. the name he wants says 'cerf'. "i suspect that is vinton cerf. he is considered to be the father of the internet. he wrote the IP and TCP protocols for datagram handling." i will be pleased if he is attending this conference. we exchanged some email a few years back about internet history, and i would like to meet him soon. i click the on button to activate the voice pickup. "the natural garden of evolution." i say. oops. i just misread the title of the paper which should have been 'the garden of natural selection'. well, i will have to wing it from here. perhaps i can give some ad lib slant to some of the conclusion material to support this new title. but as i take the steadying deep breathe to begin the formal reading, i discover that the first page just looks like dingbat symbols, none of which i can read. what's this? have i suddenly gone dyslexic? i start to speak, making up an introduction. "imagine if you will, a garden of earthly delights, peopled by savages who are both well suited to their comfortable environment and happy by nature to share the bounty provided by hunting and gathering in their eden." i am rapidly turning pages, hoping that english which i can read will show up in the first few pages. none does. =( i awake and the feeling of frustration which i was just starting to experience in the dream quickly falls away. i feel somewhat relieved and glad to be awake. herold witherspoon and vinton cerf are from my waking life and appear pretty much in the dream as i know them. herold is a retired artist that i know. he would have little experience in proofing a paper on linguistic theory, so maybe he substituted the pages with dingbat characters as a joke, perhaps. vint cerf did comment on an early timeline of internet history that i put on the internet engineering task force many years ago. a couple days ago i spoke with an honors student who will be working on filling in a web site with historical data from this task. all the other people in this dream are unknown to me and i get little associations from them. i did study linguistic grammars in graduate school at the university of massachusetts in amherst before i got invested in computer technology. this locale was not there, however, being more like a high school campus and typewriting was a skill i developed back then. being suddenly underdressed at a gathering, or suddenly unable to read a document seem to be common dream dilemmas. i suppose this might indicate that my present life or career seems somewhat stalled, and perhaps i am not as comfortable with that as i think. )= Comments: __________________________________________________________________ ______ Message: 576-002 Subject: Tibetan Procelain Title: Tibetan Porcelain Date: Oct 6, 2002 Dreamer: Dreambat I'm in a very tall building that is a kind of commercial and business site. I am in one of the elevators and its not operating well. I have to do odd things to get it to work. I go up more floors than needed, then come down (rather than go to the floor I need to go to directly). I get off on one floor and find there is no way down. I have to cross the floor, which seems like a law office or insurance company with the typical module set up on a high floor (10-100 floor). I go down to a lower floor, (4-10) and get off in a kind of market or potpourri. I need to pick up a present for a client. They are having a wedding, I think an Asian couple. I ask what design of porcelain is popular these days and an Asian woman takes me to a set of heavy ceramics that are basically off white, speckled. They have heavy or thick blue calligraphy in the centers and a thick blue( dark gray ) line around the edges, somewhat inside. The owner or clerk apologizes that the really good Tibetan porcelain won't be in until the season starts (I think rain season in the dream) and these are inferior quality, as the speckles are white and the good stuff has darker speckles. I think or say that I would really like to get a dish set, but Sierra reminds me that these are simply clients hiring me to set up a site for the wedding and a gift of that size would be more than they would pay me. I decide to settle for a little round vase as a gift. I get outside and need to get home. Now I am with my old friend Curtiss and we are running. It feels really good to be able to run long distances. I run very low to the ground, then notice this and run up more. At some point I drop a tissue I was holding and Curtiss picks it up and gives it back to me, as if to say, you better not litter here. I came to a house. A large white house with columns in the front and a porch swing. I walked in and looked around. The furniture and other decor seemed to be from the early 1900's. Still, the feeling of familiarity persisted. It was a beautiful house. Not overly extravagant, but you just knew the people who lived there must have lived very comfortably. I saw someone in the living room. She came closer and I could see that it was my grandma. She was trying to tell me something, but her words wouldn't come out. Although I couldn't understand exactly what she was saying I knew that it was very important to her. In her hand she held a red velvet jewelry box and she was holding it out to me. Trying to give it to me. Then she opened it and took out a key. It was the key inside the jewelry box that was important, not the box itself. I wanted to help her, but she couldn't speak. Then we heard someone approaching, my grandma looked very afraid of this. So that made me afraid, and I ran. dream_comments: My Grandma died when I was 2 yrs old. I don't really remember her, but I remember her funeral. I told my mom and dad about this dream. They said that she did own a jewelry box just how I described the one in my dream, but I couldn't have possibly known about it.
